March 8, 2011 The Kennedy Space Center

Today we visit the Kennedy Space Center, part history, part education, and part theme park.
Vehicle Launch Pad

Vehicle Assembly Building

Apollo moon landing generation and Saturn V launcher.

An alligator viewed from our Kennedy tour bus.

Sometimes you just have to wait.

Many undeveloped areas of Florida are covered by tall pines and low palmetto palms.
By one day we will miss the final landing of Discovery. By one night we will miss the rollout of Endeavor and its 1 MPH trip from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad. But we have been fortunate enough to see a lot: the launch of Discovery, and the recovered first-stage booster rockets in Port Canaveral.

With the 2011 closedown of this generation of the shuttle program NASA is expecting 7000 layoffs. Titusville is all about space – Astronaut High School, “God Speed, Discovery” messages on store marquees, thousands of support businesses large and small. Already there are many vacant buildings.
